How It Came to Be

business Hawaii ingredients inspirations products

I’m finally here. I’ve had the Blog Button on my website for over a year. And today seems like the right time to finally blog something. But where should I start? The beginning is always good.

My name is Gwyneth Wallace. Here’s a list of all the things I am. I’m a daughter, a sister, a wife and a mother of five (gasp) unbelievable, amazing children. I love, love, love to read. It’s almost a vice. I’m a decent cook, but really don’t do it too often because I loathe grocery shopping. I do, however, love shopping for pretty much anything else. Especially beauty related products. When they opened Sephora, I felt like I had won the lottery. All those formulas, and colors, and they let you play with them!

A few years ago, when I realized I wasn’t ever going to be pregnant again, it seemed like a good time to get to work. After a few starts and stops and a million ideas, I tried my hand at homemade lotion. And my fate was sealed. I was in heaven, and couldn’t stop. I began whipping up all kinds of things-lotions, body butters, bath salts- and all in my kitchen! An idea was forming that maybe I could sell these treats locally. And then I went to Hawaii. The handcrafted beauty industry is thriving there. And the local artists are happy to share their knowledge. It was in Hawaii that I learned about all the amazing butters and oils and what they can do for our skin. I learned about mixing fragrances. This past season I even learned about handmade mineral makeup. (Yes! Lipstick is coming.)

It was in Hawaii that I knew this was the career for me. I brought back my newfound knowledge and applied it to my craft. The sights, sounds, smells, people, and traditions of both my islands inspire me: both the Hawaiian Islands and the New England ones. (Although, you know I’m a Vineyard girl, so I’m working on my Nantucket love.)

I’ve recently moved into an amazing new studio space in Oak Bluffs and am working away on the 2014 line. I had an great response at my opening Memorial Day show, and the Vineyard Artisan Festivals start in earnest this weekend. This year I’ve added some amazing new products to my line, including before and after sun products featuring Kukui Nut Oil imported from Hawaii. (Is it still imported if it comes from the offshore United States? Future blog post!) Everything I make is natural and super fresh.

In the days to come, I’ll be blogging about pretty much everything, from ingredient and product spotlights to what book I’m currently reading. Let me know what you’d like to read about. Everything about this venture, from the blog, to my products, to my shows is to offer something for everyone. Because we all need a little ocean inspiration in life!

xoxo

Gwyneth
